Guidelines for the diagnosis, prevention, and management of persons with catheter‐associated urinary tract infection (CA‐UTI), both symptomatic and ...

The 2012 National Patient Safety Goal for hospitals, proposed by the JC, is also congruent with guideline recommendations reviewed here. At this point the evidence is insufficient to recommend the following potential alternatives to indwelling urinary catheters as a means to prevent CAUTI: antimicrobial catheters, intermittent catheterization, suprapubic catheters, and condom catheters. Various other prevention strategies generally fall under the headings of different types of catheters, different catheter materials, or alternatives to indwelling urinary catheters.

Therefore, it cannot be used as a primary resource to guide policy or practice. First, recommendations for preventing CAUTIs in acute-care patients with short-term, indwelling catheters were examined and compared, and trends were noted. Additional research into the prevention of CAUTI is needed, as is a harmonization of guideline grading systems for recommendations. The urinalysis criteria were included to improve the likelihood that lower levels of bacteriuria represent true infection (Gould CV, personal communication). The CMS IPPS and Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting Program regulations, which are focused on CAUTI outcomes rather than on processes of prevention, are supported by the guidelines in principle, but not in practice.
